Employee or Virtual Assistant, What’s the difference?

I often get asked what the differences are between hiring a virtual assistant vs employee. Hopefully, this blog post will answer a few of those questions.

You may think that a virtual assistant is more expensive, as their hourly rate may sound higher. However with an employee, although their hourly rate or salary at face value will seem lower, you will have additional costs to pay out for. These may include tax, national insurance, holiday pay, sick pay and maternity pay. You would also need to provide them with a space to work and equipment to complete their job. With a virtual assistant, you do not have to provide any space or equipment as they will have their own remote space to work from. They also do not incur any extra costs. Virtual assistants will usually be self-employed, so are responsible for their own tax etc.

Employees will not be motivated 100% of the time. This results in there being lost time during the working day. A virtual assistant is usually self-employed, running their own business. Immediately, this means they will be more motivated and focused on staying on task. Plus, you only pay a virtual assistant for the work completed. In contrast, an employee who is at work all day will still be paid, whether or not they complete the work set.

Skills and Training
A virtual assistant will have a specific skill set. (All virtual assistants are different and therefore it is important that you find the one appropriate for your business.) In comparison, an employee may require training to develop a specific skill set, at a cost to your business. A virtual assistant will keep their knowledge and skills up to date. They will be forever learning new skills within their areas of expertise.

So as you can see there are many advantages of working with a virtual assistant. Plus it will probably save you money compared to hiring a new employee.
